Challenge your child to give words a "haircut." Have some paper, markers and scissors ready. On a strip of paper write a word ending with "all." For this example we can use fall. Have your child read the word. Explain that you want to give the word a haircut, so there is no more /f/ sound. Hand your child the scissors and cut off the f. Then ask, “what sound is left?”
If haircuts aren’t motivating to your child, you can play:
Letter Thief: Take turns stealing the first and last sounds in words.
Letter Snack: Use abc cereal or foam letters with pretzels. Eat the letters you want to remove from the word.
