9-Year-Old Survives Extremely Rare Transplant Surgery

Can you imagine waiting for an organ donation for your desperately ill child? Now multiply it six times, and you'll have the story of Alannah Shevenell.

This 9-year-old from Hollis, ME., returned home from the hospital this week, three months after successfully receiving an unheard of 6-organ transplant. After battling a large tumor, Alannah received a new esophagus, liver, pancreas, small intestine, spleen, and stomach. She had to wait a year for the right organs to come in, and because she is so young it was extremely difficult to find a good match for so many different organs.

This weekend, after being unable to swallow food on her own for months, Alannah had some celebratory cake.
