For girls between the ages of 5 and 7, a Princess and the Pea party is just the right mix of fantasy and festivity to make for the perfect celebration.
To decorate the rims of your cocktail glasses, pour colored sugar onto a small plate. Squeeze or pour some honey onto another plate. Dip the rim of the glass into the honey and then into the colored sugar.
Make broomsticks by tying pretzel sticks onto grissini with chives.
Use an ornate font and write an invitation like a fairy tale: “Once upon a time, Alice invited all her friends including… to a party.” Take a damp tea bag and dab it over the paper to stain it. Then enlist an adult’s help and burn the edges of the paper to make it look old. It’s fun to stamp a seal onto the back of the envelope too, using a little candle wax (again, with an adult’s help!).

Fruit Wands Recipe
Makes 4 (easily doubled)
1 thick slice cantaloupe, seeds removed
V ripe mango, sliced lengthwise into 2 slices about V inch thick, or use 1 star fruit sliced to the same thickness as the mango
20 seedless red grapes
2 tablespoons dulce de leche
2 tablespoons Greek-style yogurt
You will also need a melon baller, a small (about 1W-inch) star-shaped cutter, and 4 wooden skewers.
Scoop 4 balls of melon from the cantaloupe using the melon baller and, if you are using mango stars for the wands, cut stars from the mango slices (trimmings from the fruit can be chopped up and added to a fruit salad). If your mango is slightly fibrous, you may find it easier to press the star cutter into the mango flesh and trim around the cutter with a sharp knife.
Thread 5 grapes lengthwise onto each wooden skewer, then add a ball of cantaloupe. Top the fruit wand with a mango star or a star fruit slice, if you prefer. Repeat with the remaining skewers and fruit and chill until needed.
Mix together the dulce de leche and yogurt until smooth. Serve the wands with the dip.
The dip can be made 1 day ahead and refrigerated, covered, until needed. The fruit can be cut 1 day ahead (except star fruit, which goes brown) and stored, covered, in the fridge, until needed. Assemble the wands 1 to 2 hours ahead.
