Kids' back-to-school gear increasingly includes an electronic device, whether it's purchased by parents or is assigned to them by their school. But such devices are not always kid-friendly as 50 percent of parents report that their kids have damaged an electronic device, costing families $2.8 billion in the past five years. According to a study by SquareTrade, which provides extended insurance policies for laptops and other electronic devices, kids and their backpacks can be unforgiving. Screens often get crushed by books, corners get dinged when a bag is dropped or stepped on, and items sometimes are lost or stolen.
