Is Carpooling Dangerous For Kids?

Carpooling may save parents some time and sanity, but does it put children at risk? In a recent report from Safe Kids Worldwide, 20 percent of parents admit to "bending the rules" when driving multiple kids. In addition, 60 percent of parents say they've seen other moms and dads skip simple safety measures like seatbelts, booster seats, and even car seats. Though the reason behind these large numbers is unknown, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide Kate Carr has her theory.

"A lot of people will say it's because it's a short ride or the child's alone with me in the car," she tells NBC News. Still, she says there should be no compromise when it comes to children's safety. So before your kids buckle up in someone else's car (or don't buckle up, according to the statistics), Carr suggests talking with the driver to ensure you're on the same safety page. Because as the saying goes, it's better to be safe than sorry.

"You don't start your day planning to have an accident," Carr says. "You never know when it's going to happen."
