Doctors Save Baby Born With Six Legs

We were relieved to read that surgeons were able to successfully remove four extra limbs from a two-week-old baby in Pakistan last Thursday. The infant, Umar Farooq, was born with six legs due to a rare congenital disorder that affects only 1 in 1,000,000 babies. 

Umar's father, Imran, appealed to the government and to philanthropic organizations for help with the extensive medical costs. Fortunately, the governor of Sindh, the province in Pakistan where Umar was born, offered to have the government pay for all of Umar's medical expenses.

"We are a poor family. I am thankful to the government for helping us treating my baby," Shaikh told the Observer after the hours-long surgery, which took place at at the National Institute of Health in Karchi, Pakistan, on Thursday.
