When Tammy Gonzalez went in for an ultrasound at 17 weeks, doctors discovered a tumor the size of a tennis ball growing on her unborn baby's mouth (visible in the image to the left). Chances were slim that the baby would survive. But Gonzalez was eventually offered the option of in utero surgery — an unknown path since this particular operation had never before been performed.
A team of doctors at Jackson Memorial Hopsital in Miami, FL were able to successfully remove the tumor using an endoscope and an ultrasound. Today 20-month-old Lyna Gonzalez is a perfectly healthy toddler, with only a tiny scar on her mouth to indicate that she had the first surgery of its kind.
