Fine For School Lunch

Mom Fined For Packing Lunch That Didn't Include Crackers

Packing the perfect lunch takes on a whole new meaning when you can be fined for failing to do so. Karen Bartkiw, a Manitoba resident and mother, received a $10 fine for sending her children to school with "unbalanced" lunches. According to Manitoba Government’s Early Learning and Child Care, children must be sent to school with a balanced meal of one milk product, one meat, one grain, and two fruits or vegetables. While Bartkiw's brown-bagged meals met most of the standards — she typically packed meat, potatoes, carrots, oranges, and milk for her two children— her lunches lacked grains, which led to a $5 fee per child.
