DIY Match Game for Kids Luxe With Kids

This classic DIY [4] match game is great for kids of all ages and perfect for a TV-free long Summer afternoon. You and your children can create a custom educational game using common household materials you likely already have on hand. So grab your paper and pencils, and get ready for some educational fun.

Materials needed:

- Heavy construction paper (one piece for each game)
- Markers, crayons, and/or colored pencils
- Stickers (make sure there are two exact stickers)
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Reusable plastic or cloth bag, for storage

Instructions:

  1. Using your pencil and ruler, divide construction paper into 16 equal squares. (Draw a line horizontally to halve the paper, then vertically, then quarter each quadrant to make 16).
  2. Cut out the 16 squares to make your playing cards. This is great fine motor practice for kids using safety scissors.

  4. Decorate your playing cards in pairs. Use matching stickers, draw pictures or shapes, and depending on your child's age, write numbers or letters to help with recognition. Be creative and encourage older children to design their own cards.
  5. Play the game! The goal is to find all of the matching cards while they are turned upside down, using your memory to recall the location. Shuffle the playing cards, and turn them all upside down on a hard surface. Choose two cards at a time. If they match, set them aside in a pile. If they do not match, make a mental note of the location, and turn them back over. Continue to choose two cards at a time until you have found all of the matching pairs.

When you are finished playing, store the playing cards in a reusable plastic or cloth bag for future use. This is a great game to tuck into your bag to play on the go — it's perfect to keep the kids entertained at restaurants or on long airplane rides. Enjoy!
