Not Just in China: 40% of Americans Prefer a Son

If you could only have one child, would you prefer a girl or a boy? Since 1941, 10 Gallup polls have asked that or a similar question, and the overall response has always been the same: a boy. In the most recent poll, 40 percent of respondents said they would prefer a boy while 28 percent would prefer a girl (the rest had no preference or opinion).

Preferences do vary, however, between men and women respondents. "According to Gallup’s findings, men are the primary drivers of this tilt toward boys; women, on the other hand, generally show no preference either way."
