NBA Star Kevin Durant Declares His Mom MVP, and Moms Everywhere Shed a Tear

May 7 2014 - 7:48am

It's become a bit of a cliché that when an athlete wins the MVP award for his sport, he thanks God, his teammates, and his family (especially his mom) in his acceptance speech. And while Kevin Durant, the 25-year-old star of the Oklahoma City Thunder, did all of that after officially receiving the 2013-14 NBA Most Valuable Player title today, he took it one step further — he gave an emotionally draining narrative of the hardships he and his family endured throughout his childhood, ultimately thanking his mother, Wanda, for everything she did to raise him as a single mom with two children at 21. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when, after thanking each of his teammates, coaches, and front-office staff individually, Durant proclaimed his mother the real MVP of the day. As we approach Mother's Day [1] weekend, watch the highlights from his speech above and his entire speech here [2]. You don't have to be a basketball fan to see the impact this superstar's mother had on his life.
