This Optimistic Little Boy Just Received the World's First Pediatric Double Hand Transplant

It's easy to look at a poorly dealt hand of cards in the game of life as a negative, but for 8-year-old Zion, he has taken an optimistic approach to the situation he found himself in. At 2 years old, Zion lost his hands and feet to a life-threatening infection — but he remained happy, and the deserving little boy was chosen to be the recipient of the world's first-ever pediatric double hand transplant.

Before the 11-hour surgery performed by a 40-member transplant team, a courageous Zion said, "When I get these hands, I will be proud of what hands I get," and in the embrace of his mama he continued, "And, if it gets messed up, I don't care because I have my family."

His positive spirit and beautiful outlook on life make him a true inspiration, and now with a successful surgery — which made medical history — behind him, he's even more excited about his future.

When asked what he can't wait to do with his hands once all the bandages are off, he smiled, "Pick up my little sister from day care and wait for her to run into my hands, and I will pick her up and spin her around."
