Measles Outbreak Reaches the U.S.: How to Protect your Kids

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just announced that the level of reported measles cases in the United States is at a 15-year high. The report urges parents to get vaccinated and to vaccinate their children in order to help prevent further spreading of the disease.

So far a total of 118 measles cases have been reported across 23 states. The disease is mostly spread through travelers coming back from South Asia or Europe - over 10,000 cases were reported in France during the period from January through mid-May.

I agree with Hadas. I am very well educated and work in the field of education. My children have never and will never be vaxxed. We follow a healthy diet with supplements as well as regular trips to the naturopath and chiropractor. It is a parents choice whether to vax your kids. I researched the topic and chose not to. Please stop bashing each other. As moms we should support each others choices even if we don't agree.

Yes, because food can prevent the contraction of a contagious disease... Moron. The only reason your kids haven't gotten sick yet is because the majority of the people around them are vaccinated so they have a blanket immunity (look it up).

Like many of the PPs said, It's because of parents of the children that DON'T get vaccinated that once erraticated diseases are cropping up. Why should parents be allowed to let their unvaccinated children infect people??? Not worth the risk to me. Just sad.

Hadas, first let me say that writing in all caps is the Internet equivalent of screaming at the top of your lungs. It's rude, imo. Second, your position is not founded in science. I sincerely hope that your children do not end up paying the price for your ignorance. Please have the consideration to keep ypur unvaccinated kids away from infants under 1 year old out of respect for the greater risk their vulnerable systems face from diseases like measels.

I had measles 3 times as a kid, yes 3 and confirmed by the doctor and they are a very miserable experience...had them once for 10 days. I can tell you I was VERY healthy, ate all the foods in the pyramid, rarely got junk and we didn't have all the 'junk' Hadas refers to that is a given today. I too am now a nurse and your non-sense (hyphenated for emphasis) is spreading myths about what prevents things like measles and it won't be YOU who most likely gets it, it will be your children and then their friends will get them if their parents buy the misinformation about diseases/viruses! You think measles can be prevented...how do you prevent the flu then? Obviously thousands die yearly from it who don't get the anti-viral flu shot. Measles will do the same if not vaccinated!

I don't think the conversation is about food 10,000 years ago. It is about measles. Vaccines cause your body to build an immunity. you didn't describe exactly how you "build their immune system". As a RN, I can tell you how deadly german measles is to an expectant mother. A child may be infected without symptoms and expose an expectant mother and cause horrible birth defects. What right do you have to cause that? this is why children must show proof of vaccination upon entering school. It is because of ppl like you hadas Hagos that these deadly once eradicated diseases are emerging again. Research BOTH sides of the issue please!!!

Have to disagree with hadas. Even though I do think we need to change our diets! Measels was around very prevolent before vaccines and artificial additives and junk food. My mom contracted it as a kid and she ate nothing but what was grown on their farm. I am not a big person to vaccine but its the children who don't get vaccines that cause outbreaks in others.

Look back in time to when there was no such thing as aspartame, or preservatives. People dropped like flies from disease. I hope to god your ignorance doesnt cause your children to get sick.

and what was the life expectancy even just 1000 years ago? From what my research says it was just 24 years. Assuming you feel that 20-30 years is a good life span then your theory sounds ok. So much for your theory if you think your kids and yourself should live into your 60's or 70's or later. Advances in medicine and vaccines is what has increased the human life expectancy over the years. These advances are the only reason YOU may live long enough to see your kids grow up and possibly old.

SORRY BUT THAT IS NO REASON TO RUN TO VACCINES THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD FROM BEING INFECTED LIKE. BY BUILDING THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM , BY STOPPING TO FEED THEM ALL THE JUNK THAT IS OUT THERE THAT WOULD NUTRITIONALLY STARVE OUR KIDS, STOP LETTING THEM HAVE ANY ARTIFICIAL COLOURING OR "ASPARTAME" A KNOWN POISON THAT GOES UNDER THE EXCUSE OF ARTIFICIAL SWEETER. IF WE ALL WATCH OUT FOR THOSE THINGS AND KEEP THEIR OWN BODY TO BUILD RESISTANCE TO HARMFUL DISEASES ALL WILL BE WELL. BUT NO VACCINES. SORRY..
