Dora Heads Into the Big City (and She's Bringing Her Friends!)

It's hard to believe that Dora the Explorer's been around for 14 years (she looks pretty good, doesn't she?!). This August, the most-watched preschool show on television takes a new spin with the launch of Dora and Friends: Into the City. The series, which makes its primetime debut on Aug. 18 on Nickelodeon, follows a slightly more mature Dora throughout her adventures living in the fictional city of Playa Verde, going to school, and working with her close-knit group of friends to give back to the community.

The 30-minute program will air on weekdays during the network's preschool block, along with Dora the Explorer.

"Dora and Friends: Into the City! expands on Dora's legacy of being a compassionate leader, friend, and role model, in a setting where she can have dynamic peer relationships and experience the world around her in new and exciting ways," says Teri Weiss of Nickelodeon Preschool.

Dora's new crew consists of Kate, the dramatic, artsy bookworm; brainy Naiya (whose specialties include math and science); musically inclined Emma; athletic Alana (who's crazy about animals); and playful and energetic Pablo. Like the original Dora, this series places emphasis on Spanish language and the Latino culture, with a special focus on community service and problem solving.
