New Test Reveals Baby's Gender 7 Weeks Into Pregnancy
Many parents-to-be are eager to know whether they’re expecting a boy or a girl. This might now be possible as early as seven weeks into a pregnancy. A new test, which analyzes fetal DNA found in the mother’s blood, can establish sex weeks earlier than other options with an accuracy rate of over 95%.
The blood test was designed to be an alternative to invasive procedures, such as amniocentesis. But concerns exist about an alternative use of the test: gender selection. In the U.S. 40% of parents prefer boys, and the availability of the test concerns some that parents might use it as a gender selection tool and abort fetuses of an undesired sex.
