Police Crack Down on 5-year-old's "Crime"
If your child's library books are regularly overdue, you'd better be glad you don't live in Massachusetts.
A 5-year-old girl in Charlton, MA received a visit from a police officer who was looking for her two overdue library books. In Massachusetts, failing to return library materials is considered a crime.
The police officer in question was uncomfortable with the situation, too, but was following orders as part of a city-wide push to reclaim over $4,000 in unreturned library materials. He said he thought a friendly visit was a better idea than sending a court summons to a child. The family has since returned the books in question.
