A new study suggests praising a kid's performance, especially to raise their self-esteem, can actually have the opposite effect. When a child hears that he's great, he feels he must continue to meet these high standards. If he doesn't, he sees it as a failure and feels bad about himself. This is especially true with children suffering from low self-esteem, who need a confidence boost the most.
