What's a single working mom to do when her child gets sick at a bad time?
Faced with no back-up childcare options for her baby daughter, who woke with a fever, Adrienne Pine, an assistant professor at American University, brought her tot with her to work so that she wouldn't miss the start of a class. All was going fairly well until the baby needed soothing. Pine did what breastfeeding moms do: she nursed. But she did it in front of her students while continuing to lecture, and her decisions are now being scrutinized.
Several students have expressed discomfort with the breastfeeding, but the University has focused its response on Pine's decision to bring a sick child to work, where she might have exposed others to whatever caused the fever.
