A Facebook Feud Leads to the Death of a 14-Year-Old Boy

In a heartbreaking incident, a 14-year-old boy was killed because of a Facebook feud, and now his mother is speaking out about the use of social media, urging parents to "keep an eye on your kids."

According to local police, Tariq Akbar was involved in a dispute with a group of guys over a girl, and the fight escalated through Facebook posts. "They were at the lake, and some guys approached them trying to fight them," said Tariq's mother, Arifah Akbar. Tariq's attackers shot him in the head as he tried to run away.

"I just want to say to the other parents keep an eye on your kids, and watch their friends and who they hang with, because you never know what will happen to your kid from hanging with the wrong people," Tariq's mom said. Research from a 2006 report by the Center For Disease Control's Division of Violence Prevention showed that kids who are victimized online can also likely be victimized offline. And when it comes to Facebook, negative comments can lead to more intense fighting in person.
