Is the right to name your children whatever you want a basic human one? A lawsuit filed by a fifteen-year-old girl in Iceland questions her country's requirement that parents pick their children's names from an "acceptable" list of 1,712 names for boys and 1,853 for girls.

The girl's name, Blaer, means "light breeze" in Icelandic, and it was once accepted in that country as a name for girls, even appearing in a novel by Nobel Prize-winning Icelandic author Halldor Laxness. Still, the official names committe turned down Blaer's mother's initial appeal, arguing that the word blaer takes a masculine article and is therefore not suitable for a girl.
