Texas School Bans Sunscreen, Leaving Kids Burned and Parents Upset

Is a school in Texas putting its students in danger? One mom believes so. Christy Riggs of San Antonio says a school policy resulted in her daughter getting sunburned during a school field trip. Riggs' daughter slathered on sunscreen before leaving, but the school's ban on sunscreen prevented her from reapplying throughout the day.

"When you have a school field trip or a field day which they're out there for an extended period of time, they should be allowed to carry sunscreen and reapply," Riggs tells a local news station. According to district officials, sunscreen is considered a toxic substance and, as a result, not allowed at school. Riggs, who recently lost her father to skin cancer, believes the ban is a bit ridiculous, especially given the availability of kid-friendly sunscreens.

"I'm not saying all children should be required to bring sunscreen," Riggs says. "But skin cancer is on the rise and reapplying at school shouldn't be an issue."
