The decision to stay home with the kids isn't made lightly. About five million moms trade in their briefcases for diaper bags [2], and they couldn't be happier. That is, until someone makes a snide remark about their lifestyle. Whether intentionally or not, certain comments and questions make a stay-at-home mom's blood boil. Utter these words, and you'll suffer their wrath.
"You're so lucky!"
If you consider chasing children and changing dirty diapers lucky.
"What do you do with all your free time?"
Oh, the free time I have between feeding, cleaning, driving, and entertaining the kids?
"You must get so much sleep."
There is no time to sleep during a 24-hour workday.
"I wish I could lounge around in sweatpants all day."
Yeah, me too.
"Your husband must do very well if you don't need the extra income."
Or we couldn't afford the child care.
"You'd think your house would be cleaner."
Unfortunately, I still have children who make a mess.
"Will you ever go back to a real job?"
I don't know. Will you ever go back to raising your children?
Since you don't work, would you mind . . .
No, I will not work at the all-day bake sale, because I have to take care of my kids.
"But you still serve them boxed mac and cheese?"
Yes, because I am not a professional chef.
"You must get bored being with kids all day."
Not as bored as I am by this conversation.
"I'd feel so unfulfilled."
Seeing the kids smile is the most fulfilling part of my day.
"I mean, it's not like you work."
Oh, I work, but without the benefits and salary.
"Oh, so you're just a mom."
No. I'm a doctor, teacher, chef, housekeeper, referee, chauffeur, and a mom.
