UNC Opens Clinic To Treat Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression is heartwrenching and debilitating. The lack of appropriate treatment options makes it even worse as evidenced by Maria Bruno's story. After her diagnosis, Maria was placed in the hospital's inpatient psychiatric ward, and into treatment sessions with patients suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. On suicide watch, she was also unable to see her baby.
This week, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill opened the first clinic dedicated to specifically treating moms suffering from postpartum depression, which was designed to accommodate new mothers with breastfeeding/pumping areas and family therapy sessions. "It's the kind of treatment these women should expect," says Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody.
Have you, or someone you know, suffered from postpartum depression?
