Up to 80% of Baby Products Might Contain Toxic Chemicals

"New parents would be horrified to learn some of their baby shower presents contain the same chemical that was removed from baby pajamas in the '70s," said Arlene Blum, founder of the Green Science Policy Institute in Berkeley, CA., and an author of a peer-reviewed study of toxins in baby products that was published today in Environmental Science & Technology Journal.

The study's authors tested 100 samples of foam taken from baby carriers, changing pads, portable cribs, rocking chairs and other baby items, and found that a disturbingly high percentage — 80% — contained chemical flame retardants that are either considered toxic or are untested with unknown effects.
