(VIDEO) Boy's Sand Tunnel Collapses at Beach, Triggering Three Hospitalizations

A day at the beach is usually just that, but as two New Jersey families discovered earlier this week, you really never know when things are going to take a strange — and alarming — turn.

A 12-year-old boy enjoying a day at the beach in Long Branch, N.J., was crushed under the weight of his own sand tunnel, which collapsed while he was building it. While lifeguards were trying to revive him, the incident snowballed: The fire truck that responded to the call to save the boy, which was driven by a fire fighter on his very last rescue before retiring, hit a father and his new baby as it arrived at the beach.
