11 Things You Overhear When Parents Go Away Without Their Kids

Mar 18 2017 - 10:00am

Ahhh . . . a weekend alone with your partner with nary an offspring in sight. It's the stuff dreams are made of — because it probably took a lot of dreaming, planning, and begging of relatives to get there. But what happens once you're finally getting your child-free time with your loved one? Invariably, your thoughts and conversation turn right back to the little ones you left behind. Don't believe me? It's always easy to spot the couple who are finally away for the weekend. Just eavesdrop on their conversation (subtly, please) and you're sure to hear at least a few of the following phrases!

"Shhh . . . let's not talk about the kids."

"We talk about them all the time; let's use the time for adult conversation."

"Wow, so this is what it's like to eat at a normal time without a chicken finger in sight."

"Do you think we should call to check on them?"

If you do, you broke your "not talking about them" rule. If you don't, you seem like you don't care.

"Sure, pour me another!"

"We should set the alarm since no one's coming in to wake us."

"I'm just going to sit here and read my book."

And imagine that, it isn't a picture book!

Sometimes there are no words — just winks!

"Maybe there is such a thing as too quiet."

"I hope they're not sitting near us!"

Said in reference to boarding a plane or sitting down at a restaurant and seeing a family with kids.

"Let's pick them up a souvenir so they don't think we forgot about them."
