What Would You Do if You Were Baby Joseph's Mom?

Here's a situation none of us want to imagine ourselves in: Moe and Sana Maraachli, the parents of "Baby Joseph," a one year-old from Canada with a deteriorating neurological condition, had him transferred yesterday to a hospital in St. Louis, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. Their hope, CNN reports, is that he will receive an operation in St. Louis that has been denied him in Canada, a tracheotomy. With the surgery and the help of a mechanical breathing apparatus, his parents would be able to take him home.

Joseph's Canadian doctor refused to do the operation, saying there was no further hope for recovery and recommending that Joseph's "breathing tube be removed and he be allowed to die."

The Maraachlis don't seem hopeful that their son will recover, but want him to be able to die at home rather than in the hospital. Others say that the decision is not entirely theirs to make, since society will shoulder the cost of care should Joseph survive for a long time on life support.

How do you think you would feel as a parent in this situation?
