Working Mom Issues

What No One Says About Working Moms

Many people talk about how working moms can "have it all," but is this out of choice or necessity? A recent report from Working Poor Families Project suggests the latter. According to the report, 58 percent of working moms come from low-income households. For these women, balancing employment and motherhood is a means of survival.

Unfortunately, as the report reveals, this balancing act is barely keeping them afloat. Of the low-income working moms, over half have a high school education or less, making it impossible for them to find jobs that provide comfortable financial compensation. They use their minimum-wage salaries to pay for child care and health care, which uses up almost half of their paycheck. Factor in bills, groceries, and other necessary costs, and these women have just enough to make it to the next month.
