For Working Moms, the Office Is Less Stressful

After a long and stressful day at the office, most people return home and relax with their family. But for working moms, that may not be the case. A new study suggests that moms who work full time are more stressed at home than in the office. The study, which was conducted over a 30-year period, compared the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in full-time working moms, part-time working moms, and stay-at-home-moms. Despite being in better physical and mental health than their counterparts, moms who worked full time had higher stress levels. Especially when they left the office. Researchers believe that for these women, it is more difficult to deal with a disgruntled child than a disgruntled boss, simply because they care more.

"You still know that you can quit [your job], you can look for something else, that you can leave — leave your boss and your bad day behind," lead researcher Sarah Damaske says. "Those aren't exactly strategies that you have for home, right? Most of us aren't going to up and leave our families because they're stressful, although most people's families are stressful from time to time."
