The Bachelor's Molly Mesnick Celebrates Riley's First Birthday in a Sweet Way

Believe it or not, it's been just over a year since The Bachelor couple Molly and Jason Mesnick shared their baby shower with us. Since that time, they added Riley to their family (making Jason's son Ty, 8, a big brother) and experienced all of the firsts that new parents see throughout the year.

Just as she did with her shower, Molly didn't want to plan a "traditional" first birthday party for her daughter. "Since most of the guests were adults, I didn't want the party to be too childish," Molly said. "Rather, I catered to the adults with small accents that played into a first birthday party!" That meant catering to more grown-up needs like having a working bar stocked with adult drinks and bar-like seating courtesy of online home furnishings retailer Wayfair.com and a photo booth filled with props her family and friends would use. For sweets, they turned to one of our favorite West Coast bakers, Jenny Keller from Jenny Cookies, and for lunch, they kept the table full of comfort foods.

With a new bar from her friends at Wayfair, Molly was able to serve some grown-up drinks for the adults in attendance. "The color scheme was black, white, and mint green," Molly said. "To bring in the mint green, I spray painted the vases from Wayfair to add to all of the tables." Source: Kelly Bowie of KCB Photography

"There wasn't a formal schedule for the party," Molly said, "rather guests simply visiting with one another." To facilitate the mobile group, Molly brought in bistro tables she found on Wayfair.com, so "guests could comfortably and casually hang out and enjoy!" Source: Kelly Bowie of KCB Photography

One thing the party was not short on was sweets! Jenny Cookies baked up batches of cupcakes (with number 1 cookies), ice cream sundae sugar cookies, cake pops, and more, placing them in a sweets-shop-like setting. Source: Kelly Bowie of KCB Photography

The Food

The Food

"The food was all kids' food with an adult twist (i.e. mac and cheese cups, mini grilled cheese)," Molly said. Among the options were mason jars filled with veggies and dip, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches filled with green apples, forks already swirled with spaghetti and meatballs, and savory meatloaf cupcakes with cheddar and mashed potato "frosting." "I also put together a DIY photo booth, where guests could use props and pose for a silly photo," Molly said. "I'm going to put all of the photos in an album for Riley as a way for her to see how we celebrated her big day!" Source: Kelly Bowie of KCB Photography

According to Molly, "Riley wasn't so much into her actual smash cake, but we also had cake pops shaped like ice cream cones, and she hung on to one of those ALL night! I thought she might be overwhelmed by the crowd, but she did great! She was loving the attention!" Source: Kelly Bowie of KCB Photography
